    Job purpose

    The Senior Environmental Project Manager oversees the overall performance of the hazardous materials (HazMat.) Department. We are looking for a seasoned environmental consulting leader to manage complex site investigation, remediation, and compliance projects. This role oversees multidisciplinary teams, ensures regulatory compliance, drives client relationships, and supports business development.

    Ideal for a senior professional with deep technical expertise, strong project management skills, and a proven ability to lead teams and deliver high-quality environmental solutions.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Lead and manage environmental projects, including site investigations, remediation, permitting, and compliance.
    • Serve as primary client contact, ensuring strong communication and long-term relationship development.
    • Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, and deliverables aligned with client and regulatory requirements.
    • Oversee and mentor project teams across multiple disciplines.
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
    • Prepare and review technical reports, proposals, and presentations.
    • Monitor project performance and implement corrective actions to meet scope, schedule, and budget.
    • Support business development through proposals, presentations, and industry engagement.
    • Provide QA/QC oversight and perform final peer reviews of major deliverables.
    • Assist with staff recruitment, development, and technical training.
    • Interact with regulatory agencies and clients as needed.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum 20 years of experience in environmental consulting.
    • Degree in environmental science or engineering (Master’s preferred).
    • Professional certification/registration preferred (PE, PG, PMP, CHMM, etc.).
    • Strong knowledge of CERCLA, RCRA, Brownfield, OER, and related programs.
    • Proven experience managing complex environmental projects.
    • Excellent communication, leadership, and analytical skills.
    • Expertise in Phase I/II ESAs and remediation practices.

    Working Conditions

    The position demands compliance with complex regulations and schedules established by clients. Due to the latter, some weekend work is required for completion of project deliverables.

    Due to the requirement to closely follow client regulations and to meet strict timelines, remote work is not permitted. Exceptions may be made only under extenuating circumstances and must be approved by senior management on a case-by-case basis and be very limited in nature.

    Company Overview  

    Athenica Environmental Services, Inc., an established environmental consulting firm with over 35 years of experience, is seeking a results-driven Environmental Project Manager to join our growing team. This is a full-time, 100% on-site position at our Queens office with parking spot available.

    We are looking for a highly experienced professional with 10+ years of environmental consulting, particularly within New York City and New York State regulatory frameworks; i.e. OER and Brownfields.

    Job Summary  

    The Environmental Project Manager will independently manage environmental investigation and remediation projects from planning through execution. This role requires strong leadership, technical, expertise, and the ability to oversee multiple projects with minimal supervision.

    Key responsibilities include developing project scopes, budgets, and schedules; managing staff and subcontractor; preparing technical reports and proposals; and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.

    This position also involves direct and regular communication with clients and regulatory agencies, as well as mentoring junior staff.

     Key Responsibilities  

    • Develop and manage project scope, schedule, and budget
    • Lead project independently with minimal oversight from senior management.
    • Oversee staff to ensure work is completed in accordance with project plans, regulations, and company standards
    • Review and edit technical deliverables (reports, field documentation, data summaries, etc.)
    • Prepare proposals, technical reports, remedial action plans, and regulatory correspondence
    • Manage project logistics and coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, and consultants
    • Review and approve invoices, timesheets, and expense reports
    • Maintain consistent communication with clients, regulators, and internal teams
    • Mentor and support junior staff
    • Provide regular project updates to senior management, including risks and solutions

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Geology, or related field (advanced degree preferred)
    • Professional license (P.E. or P.G.) a plus but not required.
    • 10+ years of relevant environmental consulting experience.
    • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (required)

    Required Experience

    • Strong knowledge of NYC and NYS environmental regulations
    • Experience with:
    • NYC Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) programs
    • NYC E-designations and Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP)
    • NYSDEC regulations, including Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) and spill response
    • Environmental due diligence (Phase I & Phase II ESAs)
    • Subsurface investigations and remediation (soil, groundwater, vapor intrusion, etc.)
    • Proposal writing, budgeting, cost estimating, and report preparation
    • Field investigation and remediation project management
    Working Conditions
    • Periodic fieldwork, which may be physically demanding
    • Compliance with strict regulatory and project schedules
    • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required
    Reporting Structure

    This role reports directly to the Senior Project Manager/Director (HazMat) and includes mentorship and oversight of junior staff.
