What are PFAS and why should I care?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) are a large and complex class of anthropogenic compounds whose prevalence in the environment have become an emerging, worldwide priority in environmental and human health. Certain compounds are believed to be environmentally persistent, and bioaccumulative, and pose human health risks. Recent high-profile cases involving human exposure in the United States have further focused both public and regulatory scrutiny on PFASs.
The scientific community’s understanding of PFAS is growing and changing rapidly. However, environmental industry practitioners, regulators and policy makers alike need a broader technical understanding of core topics such as:
History and Use of Environmental Sources
Nomenclature Overview and Physicochemical Properties
Fate and Transport
Site Characterization Tools, Sampling Techniques,
Laboratory Analytical/Data Validation Methods
Remediation Technologies and Methods, and
Regulatory Summary - Currently Available Standards/Health Advisories.
